Documents for use in England & Wales

Generally paperwork for use in England & Wales does not require the assistance of a Notary Public as the level of authentication necessary for these documents is less than a notary is obliged to provide due to the professional regulations imposed by their regulator which they must observe.

I do not assist with the following documents:

1. Swears (documents sworn on oath) for England & Wales ie Statutory Declarations; Forms for use at Companies House

2. Land Registry ID1 or TR1 Forms

3. Witnessing the signing of a Will

4. Witnessing the signing of a Change of Name Deed/Deed Poll

These documents can be witnessed by a solicitor (usually this is not the solicitor who prepared the paperwork for you but an independent solicitor).  With regard to Wills and Change of Name Deeds/Deed Polls a witness can be someone over the age of 18 who is unrelated to you and independent from the transaction.  Careful consideration needs to be taken when selecting the 2 witnesses to a Will.  You must check with the solicitor or Will writer who prepared the Will who will carefully explain the witnessing process to you.

Occasionally a Notary may agree to witness the signing of such paperwork but their level of regulatory observation would be reflected within their fee and in my case would be subject to my current minimum fee (see Pricing Information section of my website)

2015 marked the 800th Anniversary of the Magna Carta. To celebrate, the Notaries Society held an essay writing competition. The brief was to write

'800 words for 800 years of the Magna Carta'.

The winning essay was written by Janet Hoyle under the title

'The Role of the Notary Today in a Global World'.

A PDF of the essay can be found here.
